Dial in Some SRV with King Tone Guitar's Pedals, Switches and Mojo

Jesse Davey kicked off his six-string career with the Hoax, a cult U.K. blues outfit that released a killer debut album, Sound Like This, in 1994. The record, which features the ultra-funky “Scaramouche,” got respectable airplay around the world. But what really caught listeners’ ears was the way...

Guitar World playing final note, but not its owner

NORMAL – Jim Bland still has the guitar he took with him to Vietnam in 1967. He still has calloused fingertips, fond memories of students he taught and stories of his own experiences as a musician. Now it's time to activate or sign up for unlimited access! We have not been able to find your subscription. But soon Central Illinois will not have Bland's Guitar World, a fixture in downtown/uptown Normal for 47 years. He is closing his store at 129 E. Beaufort St. on Thursday after nearly half a century in the guitar and music lesson business. Waning interest in guitar lessons and competition from internet sales led him to shut the doors, but the 72-year-old isn't putting down his pick. Bland plans to continue playing with his band, Velvet Groove. He will still have his GW Sound company and do installations for live music at schools and festivals. “I've been blessed,” he said. “I started doing this for a living in high school.” The first band he played with was paid $15 a night to play for four hours. All five members are still alive and three are still playing, said Bland. He is still in contact with...

Grammys 2018: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly (for Guitar)

With dozens of dancers in military garb, a five-second walk on/off appearance by Bono and Edge, a funky Taiko drumming interlude, and occasional commentary by comedian Dave Chappelle, rapper Kendrick Lamar opened the 60th Grammy Awards show with predictable glitz and glamour.  But I’m not...

NAMM 2018: Ibanez and Satriani reveal 30th anniversary Chrome Boy

By MusicRadar (Total Guitar) 21 hours agoGuitars  NAMM 2018: Ibanez and Joe Satriani have been collaborating for 30 years, a period that's seen the release of a slew of high quality electrics.  Now, to celebrate their fruitful partnership, they've unveiled this highly desirable, none-more-shiny Chrome Boy JS1CR30. Ibanez remains tight-lipped on the exact finish, but the smart money is on a spary-on simul-chrome. Whatever, it looks the business to us, and the body beneath is Alder wood. The neck pick-up is a Sustainiac driver, while at the bridge there's a DiMarzio Satchur8 . The guitar also sports Ibanez'sv Edge Trem tremelo system.  Numbers and prices are unconfirmed at this stage, but this release is certain to be limited in the extreme. Mark Tremonti + BTBAM's Dustie Waring Surprise Young Guitarist Playing Their Signature Gear

Playing guitar in front of a rock star would be daunting for most teenagers. Which is why Gear Factor host Carmen Mark DiGiacomo -- aka "Squiggy" -- didn't tell young Keona Lee that when she was trying out the new signature guitar by Between the Buried and Me's Dustie Waring and Alter Bridge leader Mark Tremonti's new signature amp, that both musicians were standing right behind her. After trying out the guitar/amp combo, Ms. Lee gave the products her approval, which was fortunate, because that was when Squiggy revealed that she had been performing in front of the two musicians whose signature models she was using. Meanwhile, Squiggy kept busy at this year's NAMM Show; he also spoke with Alice Cooper's guitarist Nita Strauss about her new signature Ibanez guitar. Read more about our new Gear Editor, Squiggy, here....

5 Outstanding Boutique Guitar Companies at NAMM 2018

In case you've recently abandoned all forms of social media or haven’t been checking in on your favorite gear news sites, NAMM 2018 took place over this past weekend. Throughout the enormous music industry trade show, your humble correspondent roamed the halls and booths of the Anaheim Convention Center doing my due diligence. In plain English, I played a lot of guitar. While monolithic brands like Fender and Ibanez came through mightily on a number of new models and initiatives, the real highlights of NAMM for me were the smaller boutique brands. With the ever-rising prices of household name guitars, the price/value gap continues to close between the base entries of those big brands and the offerings of smaller builders. Many players are rightly realizing that a headstock is just a headstock and a classic-design is just that—a single design (and one of many). What it really comes down to is the guitar itself, how it plays and sounds compared to the cost. When people hear the term "boutique," their minds may automatically go to guitars that are prohibitively expensive. The unfortunate truth in guitar is that the general cost of all instruments—boutique or not—are going up. In fact,...

Business booming for former Seattle guitar expert now in Idaho Falls

Eric Daw, one of rock’s most well-known guitar technicians and luthiers, moved his shop from Seattle to Idaho Falls this past year, and he’s never been busier or happier. BOISE — There is little question that the focal point of most rock ’n’ roll bands — aside from the lead singer — is the lead guitarist. For the last 25 years, Daw has made a name for himself in the industry, repairing and building custom guitars for musicians big and small. Artists such as Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, K.D. Lang, The Black Crowes and Jimmie Vaughan have sought out Daw’s expertise when touring through the Pacific Northwest. But the Idaho Falls native always wanted to return home while continuing to follow his passion. After 15 years working out of Seattle’s Emerald City Guitars near Pioneer Square, Daw returned to Idaho Falls seven months ago with his wife, Melissa, and two kids. He’s working as his own boss in the trade he loves. “I got married, started having kids, and thought Seattle’s nice, but I miss the small town,” he said. “Once we started having kids, we knew we needed to get back to small-town America.” What resulted in his...

NAMM 2018: Plasma Pedal generates high voltage xenon-tube discharges

By MusicRadar (Total Guitar) 2 days agoGuitars  NAMM 2018: Gamechanger Audio, the envelope-pushers responsible for the Plus sustain pedal that took last year's NAMM by storm, has revealed its latest offering, a stompbox that transforms your instrument’s live signal into a series of continuous high-voltage discharges within a xenon-filled tube. Excitingly, you're playing a bolt of electricity. The theory behind Plasma is that these discharges, converted back into audio will produce a 'quick, responsive, and extremely heavy distortion with TONS of character'. Essentially, as Gamechanger excitingly puts it, you're playing a bolt of electricity. Rest assured we'll being you a full hands-on and review as soon as possible. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Check out our constantly updated NAMM hub for more news and on-the-spot video from Anaheim Don't miss the latest deals, news, reviews, features and tutorials...
