John Mayer is passionate about his early-’60s Fender Stratocasters. So it’s no shocker that his new PRS signature model is basically a vintage-flavored S-style filtered through Paul Reed Smith’s aesthetic. The result is a beautifully made instrument that authentically nails the feel and tones of a pre-CBS Strat, while benefiting from a number of modest yet meaningful refinements. Now, there’s no ignoring the elephant on the headstock. The first thing you’re likely to notice is the juxtaposition of two familiar silhouettes: PRS’s pointy 3-and-3 headstock, and the iconic S-style body profile (in slightly modified form). For some this will be an inspired marriage of two great brands. Others will regard it as something Victor Frankenstein might have created had he studied lutherie instead of medicine. Feel free to debate this controversy amongst yourselves. But there’s nothing controversial about the sound and playability of this immaculately crafted guitar. Spirit of ’63 Silver Sky’s creators clearly invested much time studying the nuances of Kennedy-era Stratocasters. I’ve owned an original ’63 for 30-some years, so I was able to make side-by-side comparisons. The two guitars aren’t sonic twins—though neither are any two Strats from that built-by-hand era. But Silver Sky more than holds it...
This time, I’d like to address a technique that is colloquially known as “lap tapping,” wherein the guitar is laid flat across one’s lap and notes are sounded by pressing down on the strings with both hands, akin to how one would play the piano. I stumbled across this technique as a teenager,...

One fun thing about being a guitarist is that there's always something new or different—a little-known pedal, a new amp, an under-the-radar capo or accessory—just around the next corner. As our old friend Philip McKnight points out in the early 2016 video below, the same goes for cables....
Soloing with the modes is a great way to add new and exciting colors to your guitar playing. It can also add an ear-bending “outside” sound to your playing that lends it sophistication. Unfortunately, many guitarists who are familiar only with the pentatonic scales are stumped by the modes. Not...
Chemistry Design Werks has unveiled its new Holeyboard ZigZag Modular pedalboard. The Holeyboard ZigZag modular pedalboard system allows guitarists to connect Zig and Zag together in any way they desire using the Z-Connector. Guitars can use Zig alone for 2-6 or so pedals plus their power supply, and connect 2 Zigs together for 12, plus a Zag (or 2) for their Wah and volume pedals. Any power supply attaches easily. The Holeyboard ZigZag was created due to requests for a new pedalboard that would be a good place for someone who is just getting into effects pedals, with the ability to grow easily, and/or for the person that highly values compactness, space and weight. The Holeyboard ZigZag uses cable-ties to secure and protect your pedals, which makes changing pedals easy. It’s constructed with aircraft-grade 5052 series aluminum to optimize strength, weight and durability, and has a lifetime warranty. For more info on the Holeyboard ZigZag, stop by chemistrydesignwerks.com....

I’d like to talk about melody and how to approach crafting a melodic line for either a song’s theme or an improvised solo. It may seem like a relatively simply task: you get some chords together, focus on the key you’re in, and play a few lines. But in reality there are so many different...
