Paul Gilbert Announces New Album, 'Behold Electric Guitar'

Paul Gilbert performs at the Volta Club in Moscow, Russia in October 2016. Paul Gilbert has announced a new album, Behold Electric Guitar. Gilbert is releasing the album—his first solo disc since 2015's I Can Destroy—through PledgeMusic. It is set for release this September. "This is my first venture with PledgeMusic, and it is likely to evolve as the journey continues," Gilbert said in a statement. "So check back often, to see what is happening. I certainly appreciate your support. I love my job as a musician, and I am filled with gratitude that good people support my endeavors. "I pledge to you, to speak the language of guitar into that one microphone, with the grooviest musicians around, and to deliver a record that both you and I will want to listen to come rain or come shine. Along with Behold Electric Guitar, Gilbert is also releasing an album called Vernon Solos. According to Gilbert's PledgeMusic page, the album is a clean, one-mic recording of the-then 21-year-old Gilbert in 1988, showing up early to a Racer X rehearsal, and playing non-stop guitar solos by himself for an hour straight. The album has never been released anywhere. You can preorder Behold...

Electric guitar fuzz pedal inventor dies at 96

Posted: May 26, 2018 01:03 PM PDT An electric guitar (Public Domain Pictures/Junior Libby) MURFREESBORO, Tennessee (AP) - A recording engineer whose invention of a pedal that allowed guitarists to create a fuzzy, distorted sound most famously used by Keith Richards in the Rolling Stones' hit "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" has died. Glenn Snoddy was 96. His daughter Dianne Mayo said Saturday that Snoddy died Monday of congestive heart failure at his Murfreesboro, Tennessee, home. Snoddy was helping record country artist Marty Robbins' song "Don't Worry" in 1961 when a malfunction caused the distortion in a guitar solo. When other musicians sought the same effect, Snoddy couldn't recreate it in the studio but invented a pedal where a guitarist could switch into the sound with a tap of the foot. Richards' "Satisfaction" riff with the fuzz tone is one of the most recognizable ones in rock history. Drunk man throws wallet at Stormy Daniel Famed Ivan the Terrible painting Oops. Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents Todd Albright

For this session, guitarist and singer Todd Albright played three songs on his massive 12-string guitars, while swinging down the West Coast on a tour supporting his album Detroit Twelve String Blues & Rags. For his session, Albright played three tunes, Blind Willie McTell’s “Kill It, Kid” and “Savannah Mama” followed by Lead Belly’s “Sweet Mary Blues Albright tours with two guitars, one tuned in standard and one tuned to Vestapol, or open D. Like many of 12-string players that he summons with his playing, Albright tunes his guitar down considerably lower than standard tuning. Both guitars are tuned down a fifth to A, with one in standard tuning (aA dD gG cC ee aa) and the other in Vestapol, which is open D, but down to A (aA eE aA c#C# ee aa). Albright uses a custom set of phosphor-bronze strings from John Pearse that “are on the heavy side,” according to Albright. Albright plays two guitars made by Wisconsin builder Todd Cambio under the Fraulini Guitar Company name. Both guitars are ladder-braced and very light for being large 26-1/2-inch scale-length 12-string guitars. The guitar with the elaborate purfling and binding is a Fraulini Francesca, modeled on a Tonk Brothers 12-string owned by...

5 Essential Tips for Busking Guitarists

BY PAULINE FRANCE We’ve all seen street musicians providing background music for bustling city-goers. We might’ve felt sorry for them as we hurried by, or stopped dead in our tracks to acknowledge their musical prowess. 1. Don’t Mind the Pompous Passersby Street performing is a commendable act of bravery, but some people look down on it, thinking buskers are underprivileged. Those people don’t matter, but for your own sake it’s important to know how to deal with them. Los Angeles–based guitarist and singer-songwriter Segun Oluwadele was looking for a job he could easily manage while juggling his studies at USC, and tried street performing. He soon noticed unfounded reactions from spectators. “People think that a street performer is someone down on his luck,” Oluwadele says. “It’s a weird connotation, but it’s changed in L.A. over a period of time due to the number of street performers who have made a name for themselves.” Plus, if street performing were uncool, U2 wouldn’t have agreed to a goose bump–inducing performance set up by Jimmy Fallon at New York’s 42nd Street subway station in 2015. So if you’re faced with someone aloof, remember that how a person treats you says more about them...

Phil Emmanuel, Australian Guitar Legend, Dies at 65

Phil Emmanuel, an exceptional, award-winning guitarist who mentored his younger brother and regular bandmate Tommy Emmanuel, died last Thursday (May 24) in the Australian town of Parkes after a sudden asthma attack. He was 65.  Revered for his versatility on the electric guitar, Emmanuel shared a stage with the greats of country, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll over 50-year-plus career, from Dolly Parton to Willie Nelson, Tammy Wynette, Dire Straits, The Shadows, Midnight Oil, Jimmy Barnes, Carlos Santana and many more. From the moment he could lift his instrument, he was playing it for family and friends. At age nine, he was already a professional musician in his family band, known variously as The Emmanuel Quartet, The Midget Surfaries and The Trailblazers. Phil took lead guitar duties, with Tommy on rhythm their brother Chris on drums and their sister Virginia on slide guitar. The young siblings toured the country for six years from 1960, and for several years their talents were the family’s sole income.  Like his younger brother, Phil was a relentless road warrior. He would play anywhere he was wanted and needed, and he completed another national tour in February of this year. Decades after cutting their teeth in the family four-piece,...

Phil Collen Leaves Def Leppard Tour

Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen has left the band's tour with Journey less than a week after it began. For last night's show in Hershey, Pa., Steve Brown of Trixter was spotted in Collen's place. Although Def Leppard has yet not issued a public statement on social media, Blabbermouth is reporting that Collen's absence is due to a family emergency. Ultimate Classic Rock has reached out to Def Leppard's publicist for details, but we have not received a response as of press time. Brown filled in for Vivian Campbell for a few dates in 2014 and 2015 when Campbell was undergoing treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma. Trixter toured with Def Leppard in 1992, two years after they had broken through with their self-titled debut, which went gold in the U.S. "Those guys are like family to me," he told Sleaze Roxx in 2017. "Most people don’t know this but I go back with Def Leppard to about 1988 when they were touring behind Hysteria. Phil Collen is a like a brother to me. When Vivian was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, Phil said to the Leppard guys, 'I have the guy that can step in while Viv is undergoing treatment. Let’s...

Guitar maker Fender among firms raided in price-fix probe

The world-famous guitar maker Fender and four leading keyboard manufacturers are at the centre of a price fixing investigation after “dawn raids” were carried out at their British offices. In total, four keyboard companies and the American guitar giant were targeted by staff from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). Although the companies have not been officially named, The Sunday Telegraph understands they include Yamaha, one of the biggest musical instrument manufacturers in the world, Roland, Korg, Casio and Fender. The CMA website states that five separate “initial investigations” have been launched into “suspected breaches of competition law by various parties”. It adds that inquiries “relate to alleged anti-competitive agreements and/or concerted practices in relation to musical instruments and equipment”, adding that it is focusing on “suspected anti-competitive agreements”. The investigations all began in April, when CMA officers arrived unannounced at the five offices. Its officers can enter a business without needing a warrant and demand documents. However, the CMA stresses that the investigations are “at an early stage and no assumptions should be made that competition law has been infringed”. Fender has been a household name since its iconic Stratocaster was the instrument of choice for guitar heroes including...

Guitar heroes – Museum of the Rockies showcases world's most popular instrument

HP Newquist, the executive director of the National Guitar Museum, gives a tour of the newest exhibit at the Museum of the Rockies. The traveling exhibit features about 80 guitars, including the world’s largest guitar. A Montana State University professor who conducts research w Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, one of the oldest touring There are three good reasons why the guitar is the most popular instrument in the world, says HP Newquist. First, it’s portable. Second, you can play it and sing at the same time. Third, you hold it so close when you play that you feel it resonate. That, plus the fact that many inexpensive models are available today, “made the guitar immensely popular and immensely personal,” said Newquist, executive director of the National Guitar Museum. The traveling exhibit, “Guitar: The Instrument that Rocked the World,” opens Saturday at the Museum of the Rockies. It seems appropriate, given that Bozeman is home to the Gibson Guitar factory and has a tradition of crafting fine guitars and mandolins going back decades. The exhibit includes a dazzling collection of 80 guitars – some ancient, some historic, strange, famous or beautiful. Most surprising is the world’s largest electric guitar...
