From playing gigs in Iraqi basements to receiving a guitar from James Hatfield. Acrassicauda, the group that is credited to be the first Iraqi heavy metal band, was formed shortly before the war in Iraq back in 2000. It originally consisted of five members — lead vocalist Waleed Moudhafar, guitarist Tony Aziz, bassist Firas Al-Lateef, drummer Marwan Hussein Riyadh and vocalist-guitarist Faisal Talal Mustafa. It all started when Riyadh and Talal met Aziz in Baghdad school where they were studying fine arts. They decided to call their band Acrassicauda after black scorpion species which was common in their homeland. They began performing under the Saddam Hussein's regime all over the country and were forced to write a song praising their leader which was called "The Youth of Iraq." It included such lyrics as: "Following our leader Saddam Hussein, we'll make them fall, we'll drive them insane!" Acrassicauda continued to perform even when the war broke out, but they had to deal with some restrictions.
