For the first time, this year's 16th annual Greensboro Fringe Festival will o The International Civil Rights Center & Museum in Gre The Greensboro Symphony Orchestra under the leadership of Music Director Dmitry Sitkovetsky kicked off the new year with music inspired by Spain. The centerpiece of the evening had to be the Concierto de Aranjuez (1939) by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo (1901-99). Written for guitar (the quintessential Spanish instrument) and orchestra, this performance featured the legendary Cuban-born Manuel Barrueco (b. 1952) as soloist. The Allegro con spirito begins with solo guitar strumming an upbeat tune, which provides a springboard for an array of colorful melodies. The Adagio contains some of the most memorable and beautiful music of the 20th century. The soulful, plaintive guitar melodies intertwine with the English horn (lovingly played by Anna Lampidis). The Finale revels in shifting accents. Barrueco is unquestionably a master of the instrument — his fingers unerringly flew over the neck, and his languid strains were deeply shaded with poignancy. His phrasing was impeccable. Sitkovetsky was sensitive to the guitarist’s nuances and the orchestra played with impressive delicacy.
