Guitar lessons strike perfect chord for teen: 'Music can be the thing that helps them find who they are'

(Jerry Davich / Post-Tribune) Katelyn Benefiel plugged in her electric guitar and disappeared into her bliss. The 13-year-old girl didn’t say a word. She quietly kept practicing “A Million to One,” the 1980s song by the rock group Kiss. “OK two, three, four,” said Lou Samaniego, her guitar tutor. He played the same riff with her over and over. Katelyn played while watching his fingers press the right guitar strings. She occasionally glanced back at her sheet of music on the stand. “Good, and now F-sharp,” Samaniego told her. Katelyn focused on her hands, one strumming the guitar, the other finding the right notes. “Great,” Samaniego said with encouragement. “Now here comes the bridge.” This exchange went on for 30 minutes Tuesday night in a tiny back room at Front Porch Music in Valparaiso. Samaniego has been tutoring Katelyn here for almost two years. She’s made steady strides learning how to play guitar.
