Ed Sculthorpe found this to be true when he retired from a 22-year career with the Canadian Armed Forces 3½ years ago. A guitar player since the age of 13, Sculthorpe started fixing guitars for friends as a hobby about six years ago. Retirement allowed him to turn that basement hobby into a business. "I was fortunate to have some close friends who were pro players who, very graciously, let me work on their instruments," he says. Word of mouth led to more customers, and it became obvious that his home-based workshop was no longer a viable option. "I was bursting at the seams in my basement and it was getting really busy."
